Are you preparing for a solo trip to Southeast Asia and wondering what to pack? In this blog post, I’ll cover the Southeast Asia packing tips you need for your adventure. With my extensive travel experience in the region, including living in Bali and exploring Thailand, the Philippines, and Vietnam, I’m excited to share my top tips and must-have items for your Southeast Asia journey.
For those of you who don’t know me, I’m absolutely in love with traveling around Southeast Asia. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to live in Bali, Indonesia for the past 2.5 years, spent six weeks in China when I was 17, and right now, I’m exploring Thailand solo for a month. From the stunning sights and affordable living to the delicious food and the warm-hearted locals, Southeast Asia is a place I keep coming back to. So, let’s dive into my top packing tips and essentials for your adventure in this beautiful region!
Before you pack your bags, it’s crucial to check which vaccinations you might need for your destination. I used CDC.gov to find out which vaccines are recommended based on the countries I planned to visit. For my time in Bali, I got two COVID-19 vaccinations and carried printed and digital copies of my vaccine record. This step is essential to avoid any travel disruptions, as some countries have strict entry requirements.
One of the best pieces of advice I can give is to bring multiple debit and credit cards. I’ve had my debit card eaten by an ATM machine not once, but twice in Indonesia. Thankfully, I had backups, which saved me from a stressful situation. Also, check if your cards have foreign transaction fees and try to find ones that don’t to save money on your trip.
Travel insurance is a must for any trip abroad. I use SafetyWing, which is highly recommended in the digital nomad community. For around $42 a month, it covers medical emergencies and travel mishaps. Make sure you choose a plan that fits your travel needs and always have insurance coverage while traveling.
Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay and that you have enough blank pages for visa stamps. Some countries are strict about passport validity, so double-check these details before booking your flight.
Each Southeast Asian country has different visa requirements. For example, as a US citizen, you can stay in Indonesia or Thailand for up to 30 days without needing a visa extension. Always verify the latest visa regulations and join local Facebook groups to get the most up-to-date information.
When I first moved to Bali, I overpacked with two suitcases and a backpack. Looking back, less is more. Pack light and think about what you truly need. A versatile backpack might be more practical than bulky suitcases, especially if you have to navigate stairs or uneven terrain.
In Southeast Asia, tampons and pads aren’t as commonly available or are more expensive. Consider bringing menstrual cups, which are more affordable and convenient. Brands like Flexi Cup are available at stores like Target and Walmart or online.
If you’re on birth control, you might find it cheaper and easier to get in Southeast Asia compared to the US. For example, birth control is more accessible in Bali than it is in California. Check local options before your trip.
Different countries have different plug types and voltages. A universal power adapter is essential, and a portable power bank will ensure your devices stay charged on the go.
Download a navigation app like Google Maps and save offline maps for the areas you’ll be visiting. This will help you find your way around without relying on Wi-Fi or cellular data.
Monsoon season can hit unexpectedly. A lightweight raincoat and a few ziplock bags to keep your valuables dry will come in handy during sudden downpours.
When visiting temples or religious sites, make sure to wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. Bring long pants or a sarong and a cover-up for when you need to be respectful of the dress code.
Wise is a fantastic tool for transferring money abroad at low costs. I used it to convert US dollars to Indonesian Rupiah and pay for services. It’s a great option for managing your money while traveling.
Here are a few apps I recommend:
You can easily buy a SIM card at the airport upon arrival. I got a Telkomsel SIM card in Bali and used the MyTelkomsel app for data top-ups. In Thailand, there’s a SIM card booth right at the airport.
Always inform someone close to you about your travel plans, and share your location with friends or family when exploring alone. It’s a good safety measure to ensure someone knows where you are.
