So, you want to become a social media manager, but there’s just one problem: you don’t have any clients yet. Whether you’re just starting out or pivoting from another career, you might wonder how to build a social media portfolio with no experience. Don’t worry—I’ve got you covered! Today, we’re breaking down exactly how to create a social media portfolio from scratch to showcase your skills and attract clients, even without prior experience.
A social media portfolio is more than just a collection of past projects; it’s your visual resume. This portfolio demonstrates your marketing skills, builds credibility, and helps you stand out in a crowded field. It shows potential clients what you can bring to the table, even if you don’t have paid experience yet.
Let’s dive into how you can actually build that standout portfolio when you’re just starting out.
1. Use Your Own Social Media Accounts
Start with what you already have! Your own social media accounts can showcase your ability to create content, write engaging copy, and design visuals. Potential clients will see that if you can manage your brand well, you can likely do the same for theirs. This is a great way to highlight your creativity, consistency, and branding skills.
Create Mock Projects To Showcase Your Style
If you don’t have real client experience yet, create a mock portfolio. Imagine working with a well-known brand like Lululemon (just be clear that it’s a mock project). Design a campaign or build a content strategy to demonstrate how you would approach growing their brand on social media. This will show clients your strategic thinking, content planning, and creativity—even if it’s just a sample.
Network to Get Real Experience
The saying “It’s who you know” holds true here. Start by reaching out to friends, family, or local businesses to see if they need help with their social media. You could offer a discounted rate or a free trial in exchange for testimonials. Building these initial connections can give you valuable experience and social proof for your portfolio.

Create a Branded Portfolio
Once you have examples of your work, it’s time to put them together in a format that’s easy to share and visually appealing. Here are two ways to go about it:
PDF Portfolio: A quick, polished option that’s easy to send to potential clients. Canva has amazing templates, so you can make it look professional.
Portfolio Website: If you’re up for it, a dedicated website page is great for your long-term brand. It’s also more accessible for clients who find you online.
Whichever you choose, focus on creating a clean, cohesive look that reflects your personal style and shows off your strengths.
Cover Different Skills
Social media is more than just pretty pictures! Include examples that show off your ability to design, write, analyze, and strategize. The more well-rounded your portfolio is, the more impressed potential clients will be.
Collect Testimonials
Even a couple of testimonials make a difference. Ask for feedback from your trial clients or anyone you’ve collaborated with. Testimonials provide social proof and show potential clients that you’re reliable and talented.
Be Real and Authentic
Don’t worry about being perfect. Show clients what makes you unique by adding a bit of personality to your portfolio, whether that’s through your choice of colors, the way you present projects, or your storytelling style.
Starting a portfolio from scratch can feel overwhelming, but don’t let it stop you. Focus on what you can showcase, be it mock projects or your personal social media growth. Keep putting yourself out there, and within a few months, you’ll see your efforts paying off.
