Freelance goal setting is one of the most powerful ways to create a business that supports the life you actually want. When you set goals with intention—rather than just following what’s trending online—you give yourself a clear, aligned path forward that feels sustainable and fulfilling.
In this post, I’ll walk you through how to set goals that truly reflect your lifestyle and values, using the SMART framework to help you stay focused and follow through.
Before diving into goal planning, pause and ask: what kind of life do I want my business to support?
If your goals don’t align with your personal values, energy, or lifestyle vision, you’ll struggle to stick to them. So instead of setting a goal because it’s “trendy” or popular in your niche, focus on goals that truly reflect your ideal business and life.
Before setting new goals, take time to reflect on the past year or season:
This step helps you set goals based on experience—not noise.
Once you’ve clarified what you want, it’s time to apply the SMART method to your freelance goal setting. SMART goals are:
Let’s break that down with an example.
Let’s say you want to earn $60K this year through higher-paying social media clients.
Get specific:
Example: “Sign 3 new high-ticket clients and add TikTok strategy as a service by Q2.”
You can’t improve what you don’t measure. A goal like “$60K per year” breaks down to:
Track progress weekly and review what’s working—or what needs to change.
This is the part where most freelancers go off track.
Is your goal aligned with your life and values—or are you chasing someone else’s dream? For example:
Make sure your freelance goals support your version of success.
Freelancers often overestimate what they can do in a month—and underestimate what they can do in a year.
Be ambitious, but realistic. If you’re just starting out, a $200K goal might discourage more than motivate. Focus on building momentum and adjusting your goals as you grow.
Deadlines turn dreams into action. If your goal is to earn $60K, break that into quarterly and monthly targets. Set mini check-ins to ask:
Review and refine your goals often—they’re a roadmap, not a rulebook.
Now that your goals are clear, break them into action steps. For example:
These small steps help your big goals stay top of mind—and get done.
Effective freelance goal setting isn’t about following trends—it’s about creating a plan that reflects what you want from your business and your life.
Ask yourself why your goal matters. Make it specific, measurable, and realistic. Set a timeline, and take consistent action.
When your goals are aligned and intentional, they’re not just easier to stick to—they’re more fulfilling to reach.
